CANNIKINS WAKE

CANNIKINS WAKE is a feature documentary directed by filmmaker Miguel Silveira that tackles the issue of nuclear radiation. Figura's own Thiago Da Costa has been doing editing and camera work on this project.

In 1971, the US government carried out the largest underground nuclear explosion ever on an island 4000 miles off of the coast of Alaska named Amtchitka. This explosion, 365 times more powerful than the bomb exploded at Hiroshima, was code-named Cannikin and it happened under heavy protests from fire from many different concerned groups, including a nascent Greenpeace.

This documentary will focus on the personal tragedy of two government workers who lost their lives as a result of exposure to radiation in Amchitka and on the struggle of their surviving family members who spent the rest of their lives fighting for justice for the terrible death of their loved ones. At the link below you will be able to see a small clip of the beginning of the film.
