A Brief History of Figura Media

Started by filmmaker Thiago Da Costa in 2006, Figura Media is a New York City- based video production company specializing in the creation of audiovisual content that seeks to edify, captivate and inspire. 

Figura has clients in many industries including advertising, fashion, news, film, and television in both the corporate and not-for-profit sectors. For these clients, Figura has worked on commercials, documentaries, short and feature films, market research videos, video promos, EPKs, industrials, music videos, web videos and news stories.  Some of these projects have been featured on the Sundance Channel, A&E, NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS, PBS, The Starz Network, ARTE, VH1, MTV Brasil, Fashion TV, The Speed Channel, France 24 and in over 50 film festivals around the world.

About Thiago Da Costa

A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Thiago Da Costa is Figura's in-house award-winning director and producer. Thiago is a complete filmmaker with deep experience in conceptualization, video production and post-production. Figura is his brainchild and through it he conducts client work as well as his own original work targeting theatrical and television distribution.

Thiago is an accomplished fiction and documentary director, interviewer and shooter, specializing in moderately budgeted, verité style shoots and talking head interviews. As an editor, his work is eclectic and includes feature and short films, documentaries, music videos, promos, news and commercials. As a writer-director, Thiago's stories are linked to the blessing and curse of being a human being and seek to explore themes related to the human condition, its complexities and the miracle and tragedy of life and death on earth and beyond.

Involved in video production and photography since his mid-teens, he went on to attend and graduate from New York University’s film program, where he was a Martin Scorsese Young Filmmakers Scholar and where he produced the short THE LOVE SONG OF HENRY MILK (as seen on the Sundance Channel) and wrote and directed BEFORE TAKE OFF (ANTES DA PARTIDA), a fiction film based on some of his own experiences growing up in Brazil. The film played in 30 film festivals worldwide and won 6 awards including Best Emerging Artist from San Antonio's Cinefestival.

Immediately after NYU, he focused on editing and post-production. He had a two year stint at FOX as a news editor and later graduated to assistant editor on such documentary shows as SAY IT LOUD: A CELEBRATION OF BLACK MUSIC IN AMERICA on VH1 and DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER, PARKING WARS and KING OF CARS on A&E. In 2004, he got his first feature film credit as editor for editing PEOPLES (available on NETFLIX). In 2011, he got his third feature credit as editor on ELUSIVE JUSTICE, which debuted natiowide on PBS in November of 2011.

He started Figura Media in 2006 with post-production services as the comapny's core business. Within two years, he began to systematically expand into production. In early 2008, he began working as a director of photography on MORE THAN A MONTH, a feature documentary slated for a PBS broadcast premiere on February 16, 2012 (check your local listings).

In 2009, he began a fruitful collaboration with Vice Media and as a result has directed, produced, shot or edited two feature and over 40 short form documentaries for them including directing, producing and shooting THE RISE OF EMICIDA (which garnered 1 million views in its first week of web release and played ovr 20 times on MTV Brasil). He recently directed, shot, and edited 36 webisodes for the travel channel GLOBOMAESTRO.COM and more than 150 webisodes for the soon to be launched CLOUDMOM.COM.

In 2011, he completed work on GASP, his return to the fiction genre. He is now working as director-producer on two feature documentaries: THE DARYL DAVIS PROJECT (set for release through Figura in late 2012) and THE ESSENTIAL ERICH FROMM (set for release through Figura in the Spring of 2013).
